D1 Transfers

Okay...well, I was totally wrong. My guess was off. Just for kicks and giggles, I thought it was Emmanuel Nzekwesi (he was just awarded with the FOY in the Summit League). He did originally sign with Weber, but he's now playing for the Orals (8-22 this year) and intent on staying. Good for him and I wish him the best going forward.

I'm really curious as to what Randy has up his sleeve.

This may well still be a fluid situation. Hopefully it will all be resolved in the next few weeks. However, there really isn't any big rush or gaping holes to fill. You never know where opportunity might knock.

The gap between mid majors and high majors has always been the dynamic big wing players. If we ever want to move up to a place where we can realistically win some NCAA tournament games, we will need to find that player with size and guard skills. Obviously, they are not easy to find, and developing them is a gamble.

I would love for us to bring in somebody who might fit this description. I know that it is one of the most difficult things to find, and that everybody wants the same thing, but I'm hopeful. :coffee:

“I want to thank the entire community of Fort Collins and all those involved with Colorado State,” Koelliker said via a press release. “I’ve had an incredible experience being here and learning from such experienced and professional people. It’s in the best interest for me and my family to transfer from Colorado State University as we are looking to move closer to home.

I believe that it is only a slight, slight, slight chance that he would end up at Weber. You all can continue to speculate on it if you want, but I don't see it happening. Maybe he ends up at UVU or SUU. I would take some bets on it being one of those two.

I've watched Braden play since he was 8 as he and my youngest son played on the same team for several years. He's a great kid. But I don't think he is the answer for us. He had a modest career at Davis and didn't get a D1 offer so spent a year at Snow. He is a fairly big body but he has never been a consistent scorer. I think oldrunner is right, UVU or SUU, and actually Dixie might be the best fit.

Last I looked the number of transferring players is up over 410 and growing quickly. Seems like there are a handful of 3 and 4 star guys hitting the market every day.

Sac St just lost one of their big guards, Grant Dressler. At one time, he looked like a very good recruit.

I'm sure that there will be more in the BSC and many more nationwide.

Stanford grad transfer Marcus Allen to NAU. Eligible immediately, three year starter, averaged 8.2 pts/gm last season.

You mean Malcolm Allen right? http://verbalcommits.com/players/malcolm-allen

Haha, you're right, my bad. Malcolm isn't near the player his twin brother Marcus is. Only played in 11 games last season, averaged less than a point.

 Only reason I knew it was Malcolm was because I made the same mistake earlier in the day!! LOL

The number of transferring players was up to 498 today and will continue to grow.

Vic Sanders declared for the NBA draft today as well. He could always pull out, but that is an interesting development for UI.

By my count there are some teams in the BSC who will still need to shed players by July 1st. I don't think it to be ethical to wait that long, so we will probably see more players leaving over the next few weeks.

Deberry just left NAU.

I don't know what to think with all the turnover in the Lumberjacks program.

One one note, the recruiting experiment of bringing in five players from Florida two years ago wasn't working and was unlikely to sort itself out next year. Players coming and going is just how things are in collegiate sports anymore.

On another note, too much change harms future continuity. DeBerry leaving will hurt. Six players from the 2015-2016 roster remain. Recruiting has missed more than hit the last two seasons. I fear it will be another long season in 2017-2018.

It isn't always about who has the most talent. NAU has some good pieces and could do better. It's really just a matter of how the pieces come together. We only see what happens in games. We don't see every practice or locker room behavior. Sometimes, what we see as a very good player, is really just a drag on the team. I don't see how NAU could be worse, so I'm going to say that NAU will get better. :coffee:

UI currently has 14 granted players on their 2017 roster. That would indicate that they expect to lose one more to transfer or the pros. Add to it that they are still making offers to 2017 players. That tells me that they are expecting to lose two, or more, of those 14 players.

UI must feel that they are going to lose the services of Vic Sanders to the pros and another player to transfer.

Interesting.

Vic is returning to UI. That should help their chances.

The transfer count is up around 630 now. It will continue to climb through the summer.

Jakoby Kemp, 6' 9'' 215, formerly of Layton High, just got shown the door at Missouri. He didn't get a lot of action from local schools, probably because he is 6'9'' but plays like he is 6'5''. He does have a nice shooting touch.

There will be many, many, many more talented players on the market this summer.

Not really a transfer but Woods X standout Trevin Knell was granted a release from his LOI to Cal. Will probably end up at BYU after his mission would be my guess. Weber had previously offered him.

All of our local schools passed on him. He is a very good shooter, but needs work on the rest of his game. If he was more athletic he would have signed with a local school. Cal probably backed out on him when they got a little more into it. We all had a few years to watch his development. He is a low mid major talent. He should have gone to UVU or SUU and that is probably where he will end up. IMHO

It was a bit of a secret but Weber had offered 6-9 W Marek Dolezaj from Bratislava Slovakia. At first, there was a great chance that the Cats would steal another major recruit from Central Europe. However, Syracuse jumped in this spring and after a visit offered Marek.

Syracuse went through three other offers before they got serious with the Slavakian. Once they were serious, our chances of actually signing him were pretty much over. They kept telling him to wait before actually giving him a legitimate offer. So, in essence they strung him along for two and a half months before they actually took him serious. He wasn't their first, second, third, choice, but their fourth.

Marek had the potential to being an automatic contributor for the Cats, if not a starter at the 3 this upcoming season. For Weber, losing Marek is a bummer deal, but I wouldn't say an insurmountable loss. All we can do is wish Marek good luck, and when he transfers in a year, that he once again gives Weber State a look. Syracuse is currently under probation and can only have 11 scholarship players this season. Next season they are back to 12 and the following 13. They are already recruiting 11 wings for the 2018 season, which means that Syracuse is already over recruiting Marek before he has even stepped on campus.

Okay...so, what options are left for the 13th scholarship?

A. Sign a Freshman
B. Sign a 5th year guy
C. Sign a Transfer
D. Sign a JUCO
E. Resign a player who was going to leave.

A. I really don't think this is an option, unless nobody gets signed this Summer, then yes, Randy will sign a kid this November. All the best for 2017, have already signed. Most of those that haven't signed is because of talent and potential, by this point the vast majority 95% will end up at JCs, or lower divisions schools. There are a few out there who have talent, but those guys will end up at P5's.

B. This could definitely be an option. We all know that Alberts visited and has yet to sign. However, is Alberts that player who can take Weber to the next level? I've written this before, but why sign a 5th year guy if he isn't better than the guys you already have, or isn't substantially better than guys who are leaving your team? I don't doubt Alberts potential and yes, he did play for Gonzaga, who was just in the National Title game, but...is he the "it" guy who can help Weber get to that next level? No matter, I think this is the best option. It might not end up being Alberts, but I wouldn't doubt seeing a 5th year guy.

C. As Olds has pointed out, there are a lot of guys on the transfer list who haven't found a home yet. Weber has struck gold in the past. But, in the vast majority of cases, a transfer will not be eligible for a year and the Cats will have to provide him with 3 or 2 years of a scholarship, which shouldn't, at first, be an issue, but could turn into one. With Cannon leaving that gives the 13th 2 years. So, a guy like Alberts, who has 2 years and can automatically, it is a perfect situation, but a guy who is a Soph and has to sit a year to play two, could become an issue in the future.

D. I don't think this is the direction the coaching staff is going towards. With all the talent available on the transfers list, why waste time going after JUCO's who aren't anywhere near the talent level that could join the program.

E. Gittens and Cannon are still in Ogden. If you can't find anyone else, why waste a scholarship when you have two guys who are leaving your program, that you know are proven DI commodities? Also, why bring in a 5th year guy who isn't far and away better than Gittens or Cannon?

Gittens is gone gone. If we resign him I'll go streaking across the field at Homecoming

I agree. Keeping one of those two is not an option at this point, for a lot of reasons.

Between now and fall the transfer list will just continue to grow. You never know when a gem may land on your doorstep. If that does not happen, we sign someone in November.

I agree...however, why go into a season with only 12 guys on scholarship? It is almost like we are penalizing ourselves. Truly, I believe that we will sign a 5th year guy or a transfer before July.
