Does the athletic dept have to pay the University non-resident tuition for kids from out of state or do they get a break and pay in state tuition rates?

Out of state tuition for non-residents.
Not that I don't appreciate the out of state kids but as cash strapped as the athletic dept is why not place more emphasis on Wash kids, or do they?

I'm by no means a recruiting expert, but generally speaking, I think the coaching staff places a HUGE emphasis on recruiting Washington High Schools in particular, but the PNW in general. Any time you can keep the best talent in-state, it is a huge bonus, because as you mentioned - those scholarships count towards in-state tuition being spent. Eastern is in a huge advantage over a lot of the Big Sky because it resides in a highly under-rated High School football state of 6m people that it can offer in-state scholarships to, whereas schools like Montana and MSU don't have enough in-state Division I level athletes and are forced to spend a lot more money on out of state scholarships. People talk about the disparity in operating budgets between us and the Montana schools and they fail to recognize how much more money those schools are spending on out of state scholarships than Eastern is. The strength of EWU's program will always be Washingrton kids.

That said, I'm not sure we'd be able to compete at the level we are at without heavily recruiting California. In particular, we've had a lot of success with skill position players from the Bay Area, and SoCal to a lesser extent. Most of the really good skill position players we've had in the past 10 or so years have been from California. Think Meyer, Nichols, Jones, Adams, etc.

I think each season there's a set number of out of state scholarships that we're able to offer. The key is balance between having a solid base in Washington and being able to reach out and expand that towards areas that have really good football talent in other States. We wouldn't be winning as much if we were to just recruit the state of Washington.

Yikes, you guys are serious. The budget is the AD's and Coaches purview IMO. After the last three years of recruiting, not likely to be critical of who the coaches are targeting or bringing into the program.

That said, well reasoned Ranger. Let's face it, some years the home town players aren't the best available and those that are, eyeball D1. You just have to look at Boise St this year and how the bigboys (USC and Oklahoma in this case) can move in on a player after they verbal. Gotta keep a deep base of HS Coaches and know the players coming up. Good case is Asan, per the article I posted earlier, he hasn't played this season due to injury, but he has all the measurables of a 50-100 ranked RB that would normally garner D1 attention. Trust the process. :-)

Ranger, on your list of athletes with offers from Eastern, NW Elite Index has Terence Grady, Kentwood,6-5 WR having offers from EWU - and Portland State. Keep going after those 6-5 wide receivers - and he's from the state of Washington! Both Montana and Montana State's tall receiver hurt us.

He took a trip to PSU this past weekend....Hoping he sees the light. Where else would you rather spend the next 5 years as a receiver than EWU???? Duh.

Burton at PSU is a pretty good recruiter and gets kids to drink the PSU kool-aid. Remember VA was originally committed to EWU, then de-committed in favor of PSU, and didn't re-commit to EWU until national LOI day. Burton has also stolen several Washington kids the last several years. Good thing we've been able to nab quite a few Oregon kids.

I thought Adams originally committed to PSU, before switching to EWU?

I don't know the specifics of his recruitment but they did mention during the Root broadcast that he had flipped back and forth between EWU and Portland State so I think Ranger is correct.

I don't think we have ever had five verbals this soon in recruiting, how early did Cooper Kupp commit last year? Recruits often wait until late in the process hoping to get an offer from an FBS school (of course they sometimes decommit when they get that late offer).I wonder if Colorado EWUmomma had any influence in Conner Cain verbaling. Or maybe it was the game Saturday that convinced him to commit early. He also had an offer from Montana, among others. If EWUmomma could have been at the Coaches' show last night she would have been proud of Beau's recognizing the great job the offensive line did in the MSU win. They really were a 'Big Unit'.

I live right next to Tigard and seen Manu Rasmussen play. Dude is FAST.
How fast we talkin'? I can't imagine he run's 4.4 or less at his size, otherwise he'd be committing to a Pac-12 school. I hope he sticks though, we could use some big backs.

I might try to catch one of Tigards games this week or next to see him. I get to see Hennessey often, but it'd be cool to check out another recruit.

RB/DB - Asan Neil-Evergin - 5'8, 173 - Olympia WA
Great athleticism and awareness. Fun to watch.
