Match Ups from around the Big Sky

Ya, PSU flat outplayed Duke the first half with the exception of accumulating fouls. They came out OK in the 2nd half but the fouls became an issue and their shooting cooled off. I thought the officiating tightened up in 2nd half and started favoring Duke with touchy fouls where some physical contact by Duke was being missed or ignored. The imbalanced calls made it chippy and PSU kinda lost focus and composure somewhat, especially PSU's North who led all scorers with 24 and that was even after sitting out much of the last 10 minutes and the last 6 because of him being an idiot and not being able to keep his mouth shut.

Is Portland State the team to beat after getting selected 8th/9th in the pre season polls? They have had some really nice showings. Also almost beat butler...

Sorry I was missing in action last week.

PSU had a really good weekend at the PK80. Played Duke tough then took Butler down to the wire. Then concluded with a win over Stanford. Stanford looks to be down this year. I know that a few will disagree, but I think those 3 games will have more of an impact on PSU than our entire out of conference schedule.

Northern Colorado notched wins against Youngstown State, South Dakota and Southern Miss.

Idaho got wins against Cal Poly and Santa Clara in the Great Alaska Shootout

The conference is definitely improved this season. About PSU though, they had the best OOC of anyone last season and didn't do much in conference, so I'll wait and see. Good to see them playing some big names tough though.

I think you have to give them some consideration. PSU's only losses are to Duke and a 2 point loss to Butler. They still have games at Cal and Oregon. They will be battle tested by the time conference play begins.

Montana gets Stanford this week so we will see if the Big Sky can go 3-0 vs. the Cardinal.

Northern Colorado looks top tier as well. I think we will have 4 or 5 teams at the top of the standings separated by a game or two.

Does not look like anybody will be dominating the league. :coffee:

Cal is terrible this year so I would say Portland St should throttle them....Stanford is not very good for a P12 team either so I think Montana will beat them as well but that might go Stanford's way because of the home cooking they usually get...We are not very good this year again...can't shoot the 3 ball and can barely shoot the lay-ups...our loss of Graves is killing us as we have NO ONE else who can go to the hole allowing teams to play us tough on the outside with no fear of getting beat to the basket...

Is Katz on the hot seat this year or is next year the time when his seat gets toasty? I like him as a coach and have expected a little more the last few years.

The conference has gotten some road wins, but has been impressive in the neutral court games. Hopefully it translates into a better seed this year. Lunardi has Idaho in the Play in game. Obviously he hasn't watched much of the conference so far.

Katz's contract runs til '19-'20 so he is secure up to that season....some rumblings but no money to do anything like that...I still feel good about Katz but he is up against the wall trying to recruit without a new event center...if he got new facilities, I have no doubts he would have the Hornets near the top every season...it is almost impossible to get the athletes needed to come play in the 'Nest'........

Crazy stat that sticks out, Big Sky teams have played 7 total D1 home games compared to 27 road and 27 neutral. The scheduling struggle is real!

Katz did sign a top notch point guard for 2018. However, he still has 3 or 4 holes to fill. I think he does a great job with the resources he has at hand. I've said this before, I think that the Sacramento area has tremendous potential to support the Hornet program. That sleeping giant needs to be roused from his sleep.

Right now:

1. PSU
2. UM
3. MSU
4. UI
5. UNCO
6. UND
7. WSU
8. SUU
9. EWU
10. ISU
11. SAC
12. NAU

Do I think Weber will climb up this list? Yes...But as of right now, depth is really killing Weber. The Cats are virtually getting nothing from its bench and we need more. Hoping that with Dallas back that our bigs are bit more rested for the final 10 and that it gives us another scoring option in the middle. I really liked his ability to hit the mid-range jumper. Ary-Turner, Doc Nelson, and Riley Court all have shown flashes, but none seem really comfortable playing against DI competition. Against Black Hills State and West Coast Baptist they look good, but that hasn't really transferred over to a DI game; yet. When any of these three start playing better against DI competition, that is when Weber will improve. Defensively, the Cats have been good and will only get better. Good to see some shots starting to fall for Chapman and Kozak. Gotta be better on the glass and Braxton needs to be consistent. I know it is tough for him, he is doubled constantly. Better passing needs to happen on his end. It's all coming together though.

I'm not so sure about North Dakota. They squeaked out a 7 point win last night at home versus Presentation College.

SUU gets the conference's 6th road win by winning at Pepperdine 88-82. SUU now 5-0 ATS.

Through 11/29 (D1 Only)

Overall 24-41 (.369)
Home 4-3 (.571)
Road 6-25 (.193)
Neutral 14-13 (.518)
ATS 35-25-1 (.583)

If my count's correct, the conference will play 25 home D1 games, 67 road, and 30 neutral.

Any chance to get this updated? I have been very please will the play of the Big Sky thus far, several Pac-12, WAC, Big West, Mountain West, WCC, Summit, and many east coast wins. :thumb: If only wsu could help this year...... Last I saw, the conf. rpi was in the teens, which is better than the high 20's in year previous.
