Roos Field Renovation

Give us 18 more scholarships and a stadium and let's see what we can do. We need corporate sponsorship of the stadium overhaul. "Northern Quest Stadium" sounds pretty good about right now.

NORTHERN QUEST STADIUM sounds amazing right now. I think it's a brilliant idea and I HOPE Chaves and our President are looking into it. It's a perfect fit if you ask me. Think about it: 1)Proximity = check.
2)Already have an established relationship with them = check. 3)$$$ = check. Northern Quest makes the most sense to try and team up with. It's a perfect fit when you think about that whole region.

It does sound good but I wonder if it would be blocked because of the gambling connection and NCAA bylaws. Anyone else heard of a casino sponsoring a stadium?

I don't see how the NCAA would have any say over the name of our stadium or any other building unless it was deemed highly offensive and they wanted to make a political statement like forcing North Dakota to change their mascot.

On a day where a sold out stadium, on a beautiful day, would be a perfect time to address any stadium improvements not a word about upgrades were mentioned. Did hear pregame about all the great things going on at EWU (record enrollment, new business building and many other things) but nothing on the stadium. Hope these new business students(all students as well) deduct the visitor side bleachers are a blemish on our campus and reflect a second class enviroment...that's bad for business.

I talked to several administration people at the game and they are working with a real estate developer, I believe out of CA. Plus several other ideas but non are to the stage were they will talk about the plans yet. That part is sad but they trying.

Honestly, chevez's account on LinkedIn said that they planned to break ground for the 2014 season, so I expected them to announce when we had all of the national coverage from "College Starts Here" deal. Since that game, however, his account has changed the date to 2016. Yesterday would have been a good time to make the announcement if it were to happen anytime soon.

Until there is a commitment from a LARGE donor, there is not much to announce.

"Cullinan also marked progress on what she told The Easterner back in June 2014 during her unofficial, summer welcome speech. She originally said she wanted to pool together public and private monies to improve EWU. At the investiture, she said she was well underway working with business partners in the Cheney and Spokane communities to bring in fundraising dollars for the football stadium “Gateway Project,” and for a new “living building” on campus."

A large part of what a University president does is fundraising. Hopefully this project will be a top priority for Dr. Cullinan.

FWIW, I've been fairly impressed with her. I thought anyone following Arevalo would have big shoes to fill, and probably wouldn't be as supportive. But so far, she's kind of said and done all the right things. Obviously, we'll know a lot more over the next few years, but so far, so good.

There seem to be two main factors at play with the stadium problem. Reading through this thread, it's apparent that many people believe that the primary concern with the stadium is that we cannot adequately accommodate our current crowds. That is an issue, but it by far not the one. If it were, it's one that could be remedied with relatively minimal investment by adding cheap seating that would expand the overall capacity of the stadium. To be frank, that would be the equivalent of replacing one eyesore with another. I think the folks at EWU are smarter than that. As I see it, the most compelling argument for stadium renovation is that the current facility is not on par with our peer institutions, and as such, does not fall in line with or support the President's Vision Statement for the University. You cannot be a leader amongst regional comprehensive universities in the west when your athletic facilities, primarily the football stadium, are so far behind your peers. It's as simple as that. When that truth is so self evident, I don't see how they have any other choice but to take some sort of action to remedy the situation.

I hope you are right. With sellouts at every regular season game for almost 3 years, it is obvious we have a need for increased capacity and improved stadium.

It is my understanding the state only builds classrooms and dorms. A new stadium does not fill that criteria.
We need lots of help from the private sector.

I'm almost positive that UW got state funds for their remodel of Husky Stadium. But there is no way EWU is getting any of that, so I agree with your point that it's up to the private sector.

Can't we just tax the 1%ers?

Agreed, we should probably fix our state tax structure, which is one of, if not the most regressive in the country. But that's a discussion for another thread.

Not to be a downer, but I don't get the sense that the Gateway project has much of a chance of happening.

I was at a function tonight at Gonzaga and President Cullinan happened to stop by the table I was at. She was very friendly. I didn't even realize it was her at first. Once I did, I told her how exciting it's been to see the football program grow, and it would be great to see the Gateway project come to some level of fruition. She agreed, but said there just aren't any $75 million dollar (her number, which the cost has probably appreciated since the project was first proposed) donors in Spokane. I said that if that was the case, I hoped something could be done to improve the facilities. We really need to raise the facilities to match the performance of the team. She said we definitely need a plan B.

I don't know how involved she is with the Gateway project herself, but it certainly sounds like their is no legitimate source or sources to the funding (For a project that big, I don't know who'd want to joint venture it for the millions they'd spend!). And based on her statement, I don't think there are currently any scaled down plans in place.

I hope that something can be done, but it seems to me we could be a long way off. Unless she is so insulated from the project that she really doesn't know what is going on, I took her responses and demeanor about this as such that there has been no progress at all.
