2013 Recruiting: 17 Verbals

Looks like Andrew Ballin RB from Fresno got his schollie rescinded from Utah and his only other offer listed is from us. ESPN's write up on him is pretty good. 3 star kid. Hopefully he's still seeing red.

I'm familiar with the Sommer family if you guys picked him up, being that I'm basically from Oregon. His brother Carl played for Oregon State before transferring to Portland State to end his career while another brother, Cam, plays for them currently. Their dad is also a pretty well known coach. Solid get.

You might want to edit that last paragraph so us mortals can understand.

Regarding Baldwin and other coaching jobs: There was a lot of speculation after the football season by Utah State fans, newspapers, message boards stating that Baldwin might be a candidate for the job. That's the only one that I have heard about. Whether he even interviewed is another matter.

Regarding Braun: Reviewing a few articles on Scout.com after his season ended, he mentioned Montana State would be considered the favorite heading into the recruiting season. We were on his radar, before EWU recruited him.

I think that our new stadium addition has really paid off in recruiting battles. Heck, UM has a lame duck coach and they are doing a great job of getting some players I didn't think they had a shot at.

If it makes you feel better NAU snagged a OL recruit from us after he had given his verbal to MSU, and SHSU snagged a Minter type recruit from us last week.

Matt Sommer West Salem 6-6 290 OL/DL
NEI (Northwest Elite Index) lists him as having offers from Wyoming, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Montana and Eastern (visited EWU on 1/11); doesn't say if he has committed.

Matt Sommers- 6’5″- 295 Pounds Defensive Tackle

West Salem is the home to a pure talent. Matt Sommer has had nothing but offers. Wyoming offered early then filled his spot but he holds 6 or 7 offers from all over the West and several Big Sky schools. Many thought he would be a PSU Viking! Tonight he went to the opposite end of the spectrum and pledged to EWU.

“I loved all the Coaches, the school, the players, and the town. I am into the outdoors and that town has it all for me. It is a perfect setting for me and I am going to be a Defensive Tackle and help EWU win a National Title. This was the best fit for me hands down.”

Thanks for the info, that's a big get (literally), at a position of need for us.

PSU must HATE us, we seem to steal all of their good recruits. Sommers will be a great addition to the team, welcome aboard Matt!

Mike Tate is visiting San Jose State this weekend after PSU last week. Yikes.
Could be a classic case of "big fish, little pond" or said another way how much do you want to sit on the bench vs play and possible play a lot and being involved in making runs in the playoffs.
They have only been to a bowl game 1 of the last 6 years and that was a lowly one at that.

True. Hope he weighs the pros and cons. They had a good season last year and now their coach is at Colorado. The new staff may be strapped with recruits and are making runs at guys just to fill up schollie spots.

Hope he is just getting a little sun on there dime. He belongs in the inferno catching TD's and playing for National Championships.
