Day of Days: #8 EWU vs #1 NDSU GDT

Well, the very fact that we played great in our opener and WON is a major difference. We've played a lot of BCS teams really strong and lost close ones. You lose those close, emotional games and its hard to get that fire back.

This is key. During the final minutes of last night's game, I couldn't help but think about the close games we played against UW and WSU, where we lost on an INT, or whatever. And then how those close, emotional games have correlated to the next week's opponent. In 2011, we nearly beat the UW, and then went to South Dakota and lost to a team that had no business beating us.

On the flip side, we've been here before as recent as 2013, coming off a big win at Oregon State, and then coming out completely flat the next week against Toledo. It's tough, but WSU needs to be put in the rear view mirror for now. The next two games have HUGE implications on the early playoff picture. If we can find a way to win even one of them, it'll give us great momentum going into conference play.

NDSU has a number of advantages going in this game, including an extra week to prepare as well as the fact that historically, we don't tend to play will in domes for whatever reason. But talent wise, I don't think what they're going to put on the field is leaps and bounds better than what we've got. And we've got a great coaching staff. It'll be tough, but we can certainly get the W in Fargo if the team plays to its potential.

I'm hoping for a win here and a griz win at uni this weekend. The real joy is if the stars align and NDSU has to come to cheney in the playoffs again, so mvfc losses are helpful for that chance to be a reality.

NDSU will be a completely different animal from WSU. How good is Wentzel's replacement?

QB has a good arm, great feet, size and speed. Two big backs, reasonable WR's and good OL. Defense is well schooled and talented. It will be a considerable challenge to contain the QB. Only saw the game against Charleston Southern, but new guy is a handful. Don't think they can cover our top three receivers consistently and with wrinkles like the fly sweeps we saw at WSU, their defense will have to stay at home making it even harder to cover. Tough turnaround after an emotional win at WSU to travel to NDSU. Will take a coin flip; it probably isn't.

I think your assessment is good.
Remember some key points heading into this great matchup.
#1. Its great for us fans to have tough early season matchups.

#2. Bison - history shows when they get a bye week to prepare for upcoming game after a big earlier season game last 2 years FCS Kickoff they get better prepared and ready for their 2nd game. I think that will help the Bison, but at the same time your pass happy offense advantage is the sooner you play the better I believe so that might equal it out? They keep their timing on track instead of an off week.

#3. Eagles Defense - if they can't stop NDSU's run game then your offense won't see the field much and your number of plays will be half of what you got in Pullman. However if your Eagles get the lead early then it will be a footrace and I don't know if I want that either? Kupp is great, but it takes a team to win not one person.

#4. Week 3 UNI @ EWU - Can you defense hold up for Round 3 with another big hitter? After you guys are done getting hit and smacked as CSU did with us, ( call that a Shnobernackle game) can your team hold up for another big one? Time will tell, and once this 3 weeks of the season is through we should know WHO ARE THE best teams in FCS heading into conference play. Playing at home is your only advantage. UNI is very good this year. They have a complete team, no doubt about it.
These cross country matchups, are so much more interesting and hard to predict.

Looking forward to watching this one.

Hope some of you Eagle Fans can make the far trip and experience the tailgaiting and Dome atmosphere, we owe you one. (2010).

What other fan bases always forget, is part of Kupp success is that he is surrounded by many many other talented receivers. Teams try to double cover him, but get punished by the other receivers when they do.

Indeed. I don't know why some people think Kupp is the only threat in this offense.

Alrighty then, we in the MVFC have not heard much about your total receiving corp., national press only talks about Kupp, so that's all we know.
So thanks for sharing. Sounds like a full air assault coming our way next Saturday in Fargo.
It reminds me of Miami vs Nebraska back in late 90's with Miami 4 wideout pass attack and how was Nebraska going to stop that? Well they did, they rushed 5 all the time and hoped that would take the QB Kosar or whomever was the QB and the defense won out.
So should be interesting to say the least. I think our DBacks will have their young hands full, but its the front 7 of the Bison Defense that can make a REAL difference here and force some bad throws I hope or sacks etc....

We hit that QB from CSU so hard by the end of the 3rd qtr he could barely get up, but he did, so if your QB can take a licking then you guys definitely got a chance. Looks to me that he can run well too.

Again I am looking forward to this game, I don't want a shoot out because that ways to EWU's advantage for sure, but I don't mind a 34-28 ball game either. I think our Defense must shine to get this game and keep Eagles off the field.

Thanks for the update on your receiving corp., I'll let the Bison coaches know.....:)

NoDakBisman.

We have a good mix of experience and youth at RB this year. One Senior, two sophomores, and a couple of highly touted Freshmen from California. One was a 3 Star from De Le Salle High, and the other was a 2 Star. We saw a little of both of them last Saturday. They'll be a pretty productive group, but the bigger question is how the line will do in run blocking. They didn't do a lot of that on Saturday.

P.S. NDSU deserves all the credit they get and more. I've really enjoyed watching your teams the past few years, and really hoped that we could play you guys in the championship when we had the chance. Alas, we did not hold up our end of the deal. I hope that can change this year, but first things first. I think both teams are in for a big battle on Saturday.

Is it going to take more than that? :-) NDSU has a rebuilt secondary correct? Probably hasn't seen a WR corps like this, although there are some good offenses in MVC, they aren't like this; think Montana on steriods. Of course, props to the NDSU teams of recent memory, but tomorrow's not guaranteed to anyone.

I'm with ya, the bar has been raised as many FCS teams are now really gunning to take down the Bison. Its a fight to get to the top, then once your there, how to maintain that high level of football year after year is extremely hard, and that comes down to great coaching and tradition as these players don't want to be the team who didn't get back to Frisco. Sounds crazy but that is the mindset. Win the MVFC, playoffs come through Fargo, we go to Frisco. Maybe this year we lose home field and UNI wins the conference? Its possible as we will have 2 losses for sure with Iowa and now playing EWU, and Illinois State, toughest schedule this team has faced in the last 5 years, so the gauntlet has been set.
Same for you as well, wow you guys have a monster schedule as well, Big Sky to me seems up for grabs this year, so who will win it out right? Eagles, Griz, UND, Portland State, Southern Utah. NAU? Lots of good teams.

MVFC - its us or UNI, or , maybe SDSU since they played so well against TCU and dam near pulled it off...

Exciting year in FCS Ball.

This will be my last post not much more else to say, should be another great game in Fargo next Saturday.

Go Bison,

The interesting thing is that Kupp was the best receiver on the field Saturday. But with the exception of Gabe Marks, WSU's other receivers wouldn't start at Eastern. Shaq Hill and Kendrick Bourne are better than anyone WSU has except Marks. You might even add Splendorio as well. River Cracraft isn't anything special, even for the Big Sky.

WSU was favored by 27, if I remember correctly. Might be a good bet to take up. If NDSU is a 20.5 point favorite, what do they envision? 35 - 14? Can you imagine that?
